The Tide Cannot Turn

This article documents an unconfirmed work of disputed authenticity and provenance.

The Tide Cannot Turn is an alleged 1987 underground adaptation of Beach Surgery, rumored to have been made in rural NSW and subsequently lost, confiscated, or never completed.

The sole evidence is a low-fidelity VHS bootleg, circulating within a private  ██  collector network since 2014, containing ~ ██  minutes of monochromatic 16mm footage. The material shows two figures in the interior landscape, one in a floral shirt, the other in makeshift armor. No dialogue is audible. The final ten minutes appear to be static.

In a 2016 Surgipelago thread, user `dust_garden` claimed the director was an  ██  filmmaker whose estate was "settled quietly"; another editor asserted the film was confiscated by  ██  for copyright; a third proposed it was never more than an urban legend invented to explain the bootleg.

Subsequent attempts to locate or authenticate the VHS have failed. Some researchers believe fragments were incorporated into the officially documented 1988 lost film; others argue they are separate works. The question remains unresolved.
