The Twelve Versions Proceedings collects responses to a 1997 symposium asking a single question: When Leif encounters the mechanic at the radio igloo, how can one man be ten different people? The narrator describes Leif seeing "ten layered versions" — a mechanic who is also a police officer, a farmer, a radio operator — bleeding through simultaneously. The symposium, held at ██ University, gathered adapters, scholars, and fans to debate whether this contradiction was a feature of the world or a failure of the narrative itself.
Three interpretative camps emerged. The Magical Realist readers argued the mechanic's multiplicity was ontologically real — the desert itself permitted superposition. Psychological readers traced the shift to Leif's blindness and memory loss. A third, Retro-Causal school proposed that Half Two actually precedes Half One, that Leif meets the mechanic across time, explaining the impossible doubling through temporal paradox.
The proceedings remain partially lost. Only three of seven keynote lectures survive in archived form; the full transcript was never published. Fandom still debates whether this gap in the archive mirrors the glitch itself — or represents real suppression.
