The Unrecognised
A watering hole deep in the interior: crocodiles basking on limestone, water the color of rust and iron. A decommissioned cloud-shaped surveillance drone sinks slowly through the water—its hold crammed with instant photographs from years of automated collection. Leif and Katita retrieve them one by one. Most are mundane: dust, empty plains, sky. But one shows Katita standing beside a man in a Hawaiian shirt, same red heels, same stance—though Leif is not in the frame. Katita hands Leif the photograph. Katita: “"Leif. That is you."” The man in the image does not have Leif's scars. The man smiles. Leif does not. The crocodiles drift closer, sensing heat. Leif: “"I don't remember this."” Katita pockets the photograph without reply. The episode ends without resolution: the cycle has run far more times than Leif has been conscious for. The drone continues its descent. The water is patient. In the photograph, the man is smiling still.
