The Unrecognised Man—Temporal Paradox and the Drone's Inverted Chronology

A fan theory proposing that the instant photographs carried by the decommissioned surveillance drone that Leif and Katita discover in Chapter 5 are not temporal records but predictions—blueprints of possible futures broadcast backward through a causality fault in the cycle's recursion.
The theory rests on a close reading of the scene: when Leif recognises himself in one photograph (Katita: “Leif. That is you.”), the "Leif" in the image appears older, differently scarred, wearing clothes he has not yet acquired. The theory proposes that each photograph is a courier-message from an unlived loop: the drone is not documenting the present iteration but warning Leif of iterations he must refuse to complete. The "unrecognised man" standing beside Katita in the other frames—whom Leif cannot place—is therefore Leif himself from a different branching path, one where he made a different choice at the service station or the cabin.
This inverts the novel's established temporal grammar: rather than eternal recurrence as simple repetition, it becomes a parallel-futures problem, where the drone's presence creates a temporal paradox—the future feeds information to the past to prevent its own existence. The theory accounts for Katita's cryptic statement immediately after ("the leather enough hypothesis" theories cannot explain why there is always exactly the right amount of leather across all loops) by suggesting that Katita is correcting the timeline each cycle, guided by the drone's photographs from futures she is actively refusing to create.
The theory remains contentious. Detractors argue it overextends the novel's few temporal anomalies; defenders cite Smith's essay Subject (Ontological Incompleteness) and its claim that consciousness emerges at the "ontological gap" between real and ideal—the photographs might be a materialisation of that gap made visible.[1]
