The Unspoken Stations is a durational overnight LARP work and participatory ritual installation that debuted in 2021. Participants (called "witnesses") undertake a self-paced nocturnal pilgrimage through seven meditative stations, each corresponding to a threshold, injury, or moment of recurrence drawn from Beach Surgery. The work operates on a core proposition: “Leif and Katita are not recycled characters. They are instruments of return” — participants attend not as spectators but as witnesses to a pattern that loops eternally.
The structure emphasizes refusal and somatic engagement over narrative. No predetermined story is imposed; instead, each station offers audio cues, sensory prompts, and ritual actions designed to activate the participant's own encounter with the cycle. Most stations employ darkness, silence, isolation, and binaural sound; some include textile work, movement, or spatial vertigo.
The Seven Stations
Stations proceed in rough sequence but participants choose their pacing (typically 45–90 min per station):
- Station 1 — Arrival & Blindfold: Threshold; blindfolded entrance; introduction to the sound of the earth rubbing against space via binaural headphones; consent check
- Station 2 — The Double-Vision Maze: Mirror installations or kaleidoscopic corridors; experience of ten layered versions; recognition of the mechanic's face-shifting
- Station 3 — Pressure at the Shoulder-Blades: Somatic work; participants lie supine or stand; gentle pressure applied; meditation on Leif's anticipatory tension before the wings erupt
- Station 4 — The Radio Igloo: Enclosed space with corrective frequency broadcasting; temporal loop meditation; the frequency that straightens doubled vision
- Station 5 — The Parallel Wires: Rope or cable suspended at shoulder height; balance walk; sensation of the thin boundary between halves; rooftop vertigo
- Station 6 — The Leather Distributed: Textile handling; participants touch, fold, and arrange leather scraps, kente cloth, or fabric fragments while listening to oral testimony about the armor from the leather
- Station 7 — The Catch at Dawn: Collective arrival point; dawn vigil; group breath-count synchronized to the pattern; closing ritual affirming the cycle returns
Locations
Nairobi, Kenya (2021–ongoing): The Caught Descent umbrella organization runs nightly tours departing from a (██████ ██████ ) site in Kibera. Swahili, English, and Dinka languages mixed; oral tellings of Rico the Architect adapted to Nairobi's rapid-build housing and informal architecture. Free entry; organizers accept donations. Approximately 200–300 witnesses per month.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2022–present): Organized by the Merkato Meridian Collective; monthly cycles (usually full-moon to new-moon). Route incorporates Tigulet Mariam, the Merkato district, and Addis Ababa Museum. Amharic, English, and Ge'ez liturgical chanting at Station 7. [1]
Tbilisi, Georgia (2023–present): An adaptation featuring polyphonic singing (drawing on Georgian polyphonic singing tradition) at Stations 4 and 7. Co-hosted by (████████ ); quarterly cycles in spring and autumn.
Newcastle, Australia (2021–ongoing): Departs Gregson Park at dusk; moves through the city proper (Bolton Street, the harbour foreshore, The Ruins of the pub with oak tree), reaching the coast at sunrise for Station 7. Nightly, weather permitting. Approximately 50–100 participants per night; often reaches capacity.
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (2023–2025): The Kinshasa Descent variant organized by (████████ ); status disputed. One confirmed run documented in July 2024 (photographs, witness testimony) but no formal announcement from organizers. [citation needed]
Reception & Critique
Supporters view The Unspoken Stations as exemplifying refusal as spiritual practice — a collective commitment to remain in the wound without healing it. Scholars have linked it to durational performance theory (Tania Bruguera, Theaster Gates) and apophatic contemplative practice.
Critics have raised concerns about: (1) appropriation of Indigenous nocturnal ritual frameworks without formal acknowledgment [citation needed]; (2) the unmarked authority of guides and curators in shaping "witness"; (3) whether the work risks aestheticizing the cycle rather than resisting it materially.
