The Wings Before the Fall
Chaos fragments the cabin. Wild dogs, military police, Dirtheart activists converge. A wood-chipper mech ploughs through the back wall, spraying splinters. Leif and Katita load the rocket cart in a fever dream of motion. Leif whispers his twelve-word question into the noise Leif: “[inaudible]”—never fully heard by waking ears. The cart launches down toward the city mouth. The camera holds on Katita's face: she has been waiting for this moment. White wings erupt from Leif's shoulder-blades, involuntary and vast, catching the first red light of dawn. For one frame—suspended, unbroken, complete. The Karman line pulses, a low drone at the edge of silence. His trajectory inverts mid-flight. Wings and body fold. He plummets toward the sand.
