The Wings That Fall
Chapter 6: the rocket cart screams down toward the city's mouth at sunrise. Chaos—military police, wild dogs, Dirtheart activists, the farmer's wood-chipper mech—a final shattering. Leif and Katita flee. The sun crests the horizon. At that exact moment, white wings erupt from Leif's shoulder blades, tearing through his Hawaiian shirt. He lifts. For one breath, he *flies*—finally, impossibly free. Katita's face breaks into a smile, the first smile of the entire story. Katita: “You're flying. You're—” But the wings are wax. The physics inverts. He falls catastrophically into the scrub, his body crumpling. Katita, armoured, lands intact. She laughs, then screams. Katita: “no no no no” She approaches his broken form as the tape rewinds. The cycle resets. The sun rises again.
