Threshold Doubled (Immersive/Temporal Experiment, 2017)

Not to be confused with the motif The Threshold.

Threshold Doubled constructs two simultaneous rooms, visible through a partial partition, in which an actor and an actress enact near-identical scenes with critical variations—one replays at fractional speed, the other at accelerated tempo. The spectator stands at the architectural threshold between them, hearing binaural audio from both spaces, unable to synchronize attention without motion.

The installation stages Leif and Katita approaching a doorway in six different temporal regimes (real-time, half-speed, double-speed, reverse, stuttered, stationary). In each version, their dialogue and gesture shift subtly; in some loops Leif asks his twelve-word question at the threshold; in others, he never opens his mouth. Katita's red hair and leather armour remain constant anchors.

The work argues that the glitch is not a narrative problem but a *temporal* one: Half One and Half Two cannot join because they move at different speeds, and no duration can resolve the seam. By forcing the viewer into perpetual motion, Threshold Doubled reframes the archive's fundamental impossibility as an ethical demand: keep moving, or the story collapses.

A 2024 technical annotation disputes whether a seventh loop (hidden, at 0.001× speed) was part of the original design or later intervention. [citation needed]
