Yucatec

A free web-based interactive fiction told entirely in Yucatec (Yucatec Maya), with accompanying visual panels rendered in the style of pre-Columbian codices by contemporary Yucatec artists. Leif becomes K'isin, the earthlord traveller; Katita is Ixchel, red-clothed weaver-warrior navigating cenotes, tropical forest, and ruined towns. Player choices determine narrative variant: Ka'a (the twin-soul), where Leif seeks Katita across waterways; or X'balanke (the maize-player), where they are already married, playing games at the world's edge.
The work treats the glitch as an ontological principle found in Popol Vuh's creation mythology—worlds unmade and remade. Each playthrough generates a unique codex; illustrated pages appear dynamically based on choice, styled after Madrid, Dresden, or Paris codices. Imagery draws on authenticated Yucatec ceremonial vocabulary, cross-checked against contemporary First Nations narrative structures [1].
The collective released all translations under Creative Commons license; the work is now taught in Yucatec language immersion schools across the Yucatan Peninsula [citation needed].
