Breath marks the threshold between stillness and recurrence, death and birth, the cycle unbroken. In the novel's final scene, the newborn daughter's first breath is neither miraculous nor redemptive—only a breath, the irreducible sign of return. Katita listens for the Kármán line's sigh—the earth's breath at the boundary of space. Many adaptations read this as cosmic respiration; others render it domestically, as the breathing of the makeshift clinic's walls. Empty World Meditations #3, #9, and #27 encode breath-count walking protocols, treating each inhalation as a pilgrimage marker. The cycle is breath itself: in, out, in, out. Leif and Katita never gasp in triumph; they breathe through damage.
