canon bible
This article concerns the reference document guiding Surgipelago contributors. For the novel, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel).

The canon bible is a comprehensive textual apparatus maintained by Surgipelago contributors to ensure consistency across adaptation. It encodes immutable facts: the novel's 2020 publication by C. W. Smith under Abrachas Publishing; the existence of the glitch; the biography of Leif and Katita; the structure of the embedded story (two halves, six chapters, four scenes per chapter [citation needed]); the master motifs (the coin, the sound of the earth rubbing against space, the cycle), and the frame narrative (Street Fighter, Newcastle, Shanbudia, marriage, fatherhood).
Critically, the bible establishes that **contradictions between adaptations are canonical**. Each adaptation resolves the glitch differently; no resolution is "correct." This paradox—a canon built on irresolvable contradiction—has sparked fandom debate: Is the bible a stabilizing force, or does the cycle destabilize it? Should it be updated as contradictions emerge? Is it being tended by forces beyond contributors' knowing? [citation needed]
The bible forbids retroactive fabrication of pre-2020 adaptations, though retro-causal apocrypha—"the past is composed by the future"—remain disputed artifacts. Unresolved: whether the archive writes itself. Whether incompleteness is the archive's true form.
