character
This article concerns the philosophical status of character in Beach Surgery. For the complete character list, see List of Beach Surgery characters. For the master thesis on recursion, see Instruments of Return—Leif, Katita, and the Architecture of Recursion Across C. W. Smith's Oeuvre and the Global Beach Surgery Franchise.
In Beach Surgery and C. W. Smith's oeuvre, character is not identity but recursion. Leif and Katita are not protagonists who recur; they are instruments of return, consciousness-patterns that surface under different names across texts and global adaptations, each time misremembered.
The novel fixes them: Katita with red hair and bastardised sword; Leif with three injuries and Hawaiian shirt. But in Saltando they are lovers at the baths, unnamed. In Pugil (web version) they become Max and Adria entirely. In Fellow Disjecta, Oh Sunny Danger Time Leif is one-armed founder of a solar-punk collective; Katita its property manager. The pattern holds: devotion, asymmetry, the work of breaking a cycle.
This is not inconsistency but ontological principle: consciousness arises as analogy of itself, a gap that character fills imperfectly. Every adaptation misnames them, and that misremembering is the work. To recognise Leif in the baker-boxer is to feel recursion; to miss him is to live it.
Global adaptations treat characters as souls reborn into regional bodies: Makoko fishers, Addis Ababa icon-painters, Oaxacan weavers. The character is the wound that heals and opens again, forever particular, forever returning. Some readers argue they are one consciousness in fissure.
