circle of life

For the broader theme of cyclical recurrence, see Eternal recurrence / breaking the cycle. For the glitch at this moment, see The Seam.

Circle of life is the moment in Chapter 3 when Leif and Katita, having escaped through the underground stone pool into the harbour, are snatched by the mechanical seagull, break free, and crash-land back on the same apartment balcony where they began. The narrative names this closure directly: “circle of life”.

It is the novel's first visible loop—and its most optimistic reading. On the literal level, the pair has traveled through the city in a circle, arriving home. But nothing has changed. The apartment is still there; Mr and Mrs McRae, still there with their exoskeletons; the rooftop of Bolton Street car park still waiting above. The pair has moved through space and returned unchanged.

This becomes the prototype for the cycle that Katita cannot break. Each adaptation interprets the circle differently: as tragic recurrence, as a redemptive spiral, or as the glitch itself—the place where Half One should connect to Half Two, but the seam does not compute. Some works argue the circle is not closure but an infinite in-between.
