An icon-panel is a sequence of separate icon paintings arranged in narrative relationship, each frame a self-contained sacred image that relates to its neighbors through proximity rather than unified perspective. Rooted in Ethiopian Orthodox, Armenian, and Coptic traditions, icon-panel cycles transform linear narrative into a grid of contemplative stillness — the viewer assembles meaning between images.
In Ethiopian and West African textile adaptations of the franchise, the icon-panel form maps precisely onto the novel's structural grid. Each panel isolates a moment: Katita preparing; Leif blind and wheeled; wings erupting from his back; the crash. Because the cycle repeats, each loop requires a fresh panel-set, transforming the icon-panel from a completed history into a perpetual return.
Between the panels, space becomes active — the frequency where past and looped present meet. Gold leaf or gold filigree often marks this liminal threshold, a visual articulation of what the novel calls the seam that does not compute.
