The "instant" in Beach Surgery operates across temporal, photographic, and philosophical registers—each unstable, each resisting interpretation.
Most concretely: in Chapter 5, the cloud-shaped surveillance drone contains years of instant photographs—moments extracted from time, frozen. Leif encounters an image of a figure he does not recognize; Katita tells him: "Leif. That is you." The photograph reveals a past the character cannot access, refuses to cohere with present consciousness. Across adaptations, the drone's archive becomes a metaphor for Surgipelago itself: an accumulation of un-interpretable instants, fragments without totality.
Philosophically: Clarice Lispector's concept of "the instant" as the gap between sensation and language—the moment before thought can name it. Lispector's Instant and the Glitch reads the glitch as precisely such an instant: the seam where narrative breaks, where the two halves refuse to join.
Temporally: the cycle comprises instants that repeat but never synchronize. Each loop begins and ends at specific instants—sunrise, the wings erupting—that recur without ever forming a coherent sequence.
