naam

This article concerns the 2022 vocal adaptation. For the Sanskrit concept, see Naam (concept).

naam — "the invocation" — is a 2022 vocal-music project interpreting A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight through bhakti devotional singing. The work treats Leif and Katita as presences to invoke through sustained repetition and vocal meditation.

Held across twelve evening sessions in a 17th-century haveli courtyard in Delhi, each session focuses on one motif: the pacemaker, the wings, the Kármán line, the cycle, the three injuries. Performers learn motifs phonetically, repeating them across two-hour sessions with harmonium, tabla, and sitar. On the final evening, audiences join as singers, their voices layering into an accumulated vocal palimpsest.

A 2023 studio edition, naam: Archival Edition, captures all sessions in a 44-minute piece where individual voices spiral into indistinguishability — an embodiment of the cycle. Listeners report that by mid-listening, the word "naam" ceases to denote; it becomes pure sound, "the name emptied of naming."

The 2024 All-India Radio broadcast reached an estimated 2.3 million listeners. Devotional circles across North India have since composed parallel cycles in Punjabi, Marathi, and Telugu, creating a distributed musical franchise. The work's iterative nature reflects the novel's commitment to eternal recurrence.
