This article describes a community interpretive model and practice. For the literary epigraph, see Street Fighter. For contradictory adaptations, see Adaptation and impossibility.

Nullify_a_fireball is a fandom interpretive principle, named after the Street Fighter epigraph that prefaces the novel: you can nullify a fireball with a fireball. The principle describes a mode of reading in which contradictory or mutually exclusive adaptations do not cancel each other out, but instead generate new meaning through their collision.

In Surgipelago discourse, the term denotes the observation that two contradictory adaptations of Beach Surgery can coexist as equally valid precisely because they oppose each other. The practice originated in  ███████ 's 2021 essay The Counter-Adaptation Theory—Each Successive Beach Surgery Work Walks the Narrative Backward, Methodically Undoing the Previous Interpretation, which proposed that successive works "walk the narrative backward, methodically undoing the previous interpretation." Rather than viewing this as a flaw, the community reads it as structural to the work itself—the glitch is not broken by contradiction; it is deepened by it.

The principle has become shorthand in fandom discourse for defending seemingly irreconcilable readings. When editors dispute an adaptation's canonical status, invoking nullify a fireball suggests that both readings should be held in Möbius simultaneity rather than resolved hierarchically. The practice is sometimes invoked ironically when edit wars spiral into self-referential absurdity—a kind of "the archive eating its own argument" moment.
