recursive canon

For the narrative structure, see The cycle.

For characterological recursion, see Instruments of Return—Leif, Katita, and the Architecture of Recursion Across C. W. Smith's Oeuvre and the Global Beach Surgery Franchise.

The recursive canon is the doctrine that Leif and Katita are not confined to the novel *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight* but resurface—renamed, recontextualized, materially transformed—across Smith's entire published body, functioning as instruments of return rather than fixed characters. They appear in at least six verified texts: Leaving/Leading, Summer Endzone, Saltando, Pugil, A Billiard Table with Five Balls and Twelve Cues, and Fellow Disjecta, Oh Sunny Danger Time, where they are altered in name, context, and sensory register but carry recognizable thematic weight.

This recursion underwrites the entire Surgipelago project: adaptations are not consumptions of a single source but acts of recursive deepening. Each adaptation produces a new answer to the glitch—the irreparable seam—and in doing so, generates new evidence backward into prior texts, including the novel itself. Past and future adaptations revise one another.

The principle is grounded in Subject (Ontological Incompleteness), which theorizes consciousness as a "gap that mirrors itself": the subject is the impossible space where thought reflects on its own impossibility. Leif and Katita *are* that reflexive gap, appearing and reappearing across media as proof that the self is not an entity but an eternal recurrence of unresolved structure.
