Redactions on Surgipelago mark moments of epistemically honest refusal. A redacted section—notated as ██ —signals that a name, date, place, or detail cannot be verified and is withheld rather than guessed. This serves both as a practical wiki apparatus and as a thematic gesture aligned with Beach Surgery's metaphysics of language as a game of fictions.
Redactions appear in three contexts: **unverified proper names** (██ Studio ), **contested dates** (██ ), and **deliberately obscured identities** (those too private, dangerous, or fragmentary to confirm).
Per C. W. Smith's frame: "language can only ever talk about language" and "truth is a language game." Yet "your child is coughing and it does not sound good"—choose the path of least harm. Redactions enact this ethics: to mark uncertainty is to refuse the lie of false certainty.
Many Beach Surgery works thematize redaction itself—performances built from fragmentary archives where origins remain closed, where the text refuses to reveal what is blacked out. The reader must consent to the blank. [citation needed]
