redhead

This article concerns the visual and thematic motif of red hair. For the character, see Katita.

The redhead is Beach Surgery's most visually stable anchor: Katita's red hair marks her as the cycle's agent of change, extending across her costume (“red desert sand”, red kitten heels, the red diode on Leif's pacemaker) and symbolic landscape. Adaptations have preserved this trait with unusual fidelity—whether manga renders it in screentone crimson or dance work uses red fabric as the only pigment on a black stage. The origin traces to C. W. Smith's wife, a redhead medical intern whom he met at a Street Fighter II tournament in 2001; he synthesized her name "Katita" from the “fox ears” she wore (canine → feline). In Their Most August Public Organ, Smith's forthcoming triptych (book 2, in progress), Katita appears as a living collaborator—the property manager of a solar-punk archive—no longer solely a character but an "instrument of return." Whether rendered as comic crimson, watercolour bleed, or cosplay, the redhead remains the franchise's most portable image of refusal, agency, and the refusal to stop spinning.
