rocket cart

This article is about the vehicle constructed in Chapter 5. For other transportation technologies, see Technology in Beach Surgery.

The rocket cart is a vehicle constructed by Leif in the cabin during Chapter 5 of Beach Surgery, the embedded narrative of the novel. It serves as a crucial plot mechanism in the story's final descent and the approach to the glitch.

The source text provides minimal mechanical detail: Katita observes Leif building it while she constructs leather armour from materials she discovers. The novel notes that Leif works "as though assembling a thought from fragments"—suggesting improvisation from available cabin materials, though precise engineering remains textually obscured. It is powered by a rocket engine, though propellant source and design specifications are never provided.

In Chapter 6, the protagonists escape the cabin siege by boarding the cart and traveling at high speed toward the beach. During this descent, pressure builds in Leif's shoulder blades; as the cart approaches the city's edge at dawn, white wings erupt from his back. He briefly flies; then crashes catastrophically. Katita survives in her armour; Leif is broken.

The rocket cart has undergone significant interpretive variation across adaptations. Some render it as a motorised vehicle of realistic engineering; others as a metaphysical conveyance or symbol of cyclical escape. One  (unverified ) early anime adaptation depicted it as sentient. The video game adaptation makes cart construction a central gameplay mechanic, permitting multiple designs with ending consequences. The cart's incompleteness in the source text has made it a fertile site for fan engineering.
