*A Cicatriz Que Volta* is a tie-in novella serialized across twelve monthly installments in the Pernambuco folk newspaper Jornal da Praia. It adapts the novel into traditional décimas (ten-line stanzas in rigid rhyme), narrating Leif and Katita's descent from Newcastle rooftops through the NSW interior with each month's chapter. The constraint is formal and thematic: every installment ends with the identical refrain, A cicatriz que volta / na mesma estrada / a cicatriz que volta / sem fim da jornada (The scar that returns / on the same road / the scar that returns / without end to the journey). Readers experienced the refrain twelve times across twelve months, watching the cycle recur even as narrative progressed. The collected 2023 edition preserved the monthly serialization formatting—so the refrain recurs on its original page-breaks, binding recurrence into the book's physical form. The work elegantly inhabits both high and low registers: it is a modernist meditation on incompleteness, delivered through a folk form that demands recurrence and return.
