Constraint-based adaptation treats the glitch—the irreparable seam between the novel's two halves—not as a problem to solve but as a generative form. Rather than resolving the narrative impossibility, these works live inside it by adopting deliberate formal constraints that mirror incompleteness.
The Infinitely Expanding Issue (serialized doujinshi) uses pagination constraint: each issue adds frames that rewrite prior scenes, never settling. Durational works impose time as constraint—seven years of nightly vigils that never conclude. Pilgrimage cycles constrain space: the walker follows a fixed route through Broken Hill that loops without closure.
These adaptations argue: the Beach Surgery story cannot finish cleanly, so let the medium become that impossibility. A twelve-word limit. A single frequency. A locked chamber. The Doctrine of Refusal becomes not a theme but a structural principle. Constraints are not restrictions but invitations to depth—the deeper one digs into the boundary, the more the story opens. Form and refusal become one.
