A 2023 experimental fiction film from an anonymous Taipei collective, adapting A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight as a hybrid of 35mm cinematography and live piyingxi shadow-theatre.
The film stages Half One in desaturated colour 35mm as a noir-inflected meditation on an unnamed coastal East Asian city, replacing Newcastle with atmospheric urban geography. At the moment of dissolution into Half Two—when "the scene dissolves into a desert hospital room"—the screen literally becomes a piyingxi stage: live puppeteers operate articulated silhouettes of Leif and Katita against backlit translucent vellum, framed within the cinema's proscenium. The puppet figures cast sharp mechanical shadows; their dialogues are sung in abstract vocal patterns without semantic language.
The glitch, in this reading, becomes the seam where cinema loses the body and becomes pure shadow. Leif's wings erupt not as special effect but as the puppeteers' hands lifting the silhouettes skyward beyond the screen. Katita's final refusal is the moment she steps back through the vellum into colour 35mm—a catch that restores the real.
