Half One — Newcastle

This article describes Half One of Beach Surgery. For Half Two, see Half Two.

For the glitch and narrative break, see the glitch.

Half One — Newcastle is the first narrative division of Beach Surgery, the unfinished embedded story within A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight. It spans twenty-one hours across three chapters, taking place entirely within the city of Newcastle, New South Wales, and concluding at the beach as the scene dissolves into the second half's desert hospital room.

The half is structured in three chapters (chapters 1, 2, 3), each with four scenes. Chapter 1 begins on the rooftop of Bolton Street car park at 10:30pm, with Katita wheeling the unconscious Leif across two parallel wires to the McRae apartment, where an elderly couple deploy pendant exoskeletons in cartoon battle. They escape down twelve storeys, pass through a hotdog eatery (where a protest is announced), and end in an abandoned shopping centre where Katita rakes red dust like a zen garden.

Chapter 2 moves toward the beach: parkour across rooftops, Dirtheart activists in animal masks, a giant mechanical seagull, an abandoned preschool where Leif tells stories to children, and Katita's embedded tale of Rico the Architect. Chapter 3 descends to an underground stone swimming pool fed from the harbour; they swim through to open water, are snatched by the seagull, cut free, and land back on the apartment balcony. They reach the beach at dusk.

At this threshold, the narrative dissolves: Katita appears in surgical scrubs in a desert hospital room. “Honey. I know you have just woken up. But. We need to go for a drive.” This is where the second half begins — and where the glitch's irreparable seam begins.
