A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (comics)
This article covers the primary 2020–2024 serialization. For other adaptations across media, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (disambiguation).
The primary comic serialization of the novel, spanning seven volumes plus a prequel, published between 2020–2024 by ██ Studio . The adaptation, illustrated by ████████ , resolves the glitch through manga-specific formal grammar: the fold between pages becomes the narrative seam between Half One — Newcastle and Half Two — The interior.
In the collected volumes, the right-hand page of Chapter 3 and the left-hand page of Chapter 4 mirror one another; readers turning the page experience the glitch as a physical spine-crease. A companion work, Volume 0: The Outline, expands Rico's embedded tale across six independent chapters, reframing it as an origin myth for Mylar's surgical art and Katita's red meridian.
Controversy surrounds volumes 4–6: a faction of readers, self-identified as "the Glitch Refusalists," argue the resolution fundamentally violates the novel's structural sanctity. The publisher's official statement maintains that the glitch is designed to be irreducibly manga-different—that each medium's attempt at closure generates a new, canonical contradiction. The serialization introduced Katita's internal monologue (wholly original) as red-box narration. [1]
