A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (light novel)
This article concerns the Japanese light novel adaptation. For other adaptations, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (disambiguation).
The Akatsuki Press serialisation distributed the novel across three volumes, each centring one of Leif's three temporary injuries. Rather than resolving the glitch, the light novel treats it as the story's true architecture: each volume retells half-one and half-two, but from a different injury-perspective, layering contradictory details until the reader cannot distinguish which version was "first."
Volume 1 (The Bandaged Mile) stages the mystery: Leif in absolute blindness, following Katita's voice alone through Newcastle. The wire-crossing becomes extended, dreamlike; he experiences the city only through sound and memory he doesn't trust. “I could not tell if the seagull was real or something my broken mind had built to explain the wind.”
Volume 2 (The Rocket Cart's Velocity) foregrounds Leif's inability to walk and his dependence on motion — the rocket cart scene extends across the entire volume; he experiences liberation and terror simultaneously as the machine moves him toward a cliff. The wings-eruption here comes mid-volume, not at the climax; the fall is not the ending.
Volume 3 (The Pulse Recorder) renders the pacemaker's rhythm as narrative structure itself: every sentence-fragment timed to heartbeats; Katita's perspective finally appears, but fragmented, interrupted by the diode's red blink. The series loops — Volume 1's opening scene recurs identically at Volume 3's close, but the reader now questions which loop is being remembered.
Reception divides sharply. Fandom theories propose that the three volumes constitute three different instances of the cycle, or that the light novel is Leif's own recounting after infinite loops. The work was adapted into an anime episode-sequence (2025–).
