A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (story)

This article is about the unfinished embedded story outline. For the completed novel containing it, see the novel. For the broader adaptation franchise, see Beach Surgery (disambiguation).

The unfinished story outline composed by the novel's narrator over approximately 15–18 years, embedded within the completed manuscript of A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (2020, Abrachas Publishing). It is the irreducible core around which the entire franchise orbits.

Unlike the novel — which is finished, published, and material — the story is an outline Leif and Katita will never definitively reach because of the glitch: an irreparable structural fault at the seam between its two halves. "The link does not compute," the narrator states. The story **cannot be completed as written**. Its form is six chapters, three per half, with three temporary injuries anchoring structure; its narrative span is two days. The first half takes place in Newcastle; the second in the interior.

Leif, a military engineer with memory loss, and Katita, a nurse-assassin attempting to "break the cycle," move through spaces and temptations that echo the Dostoevskian three temptationsmystery, miracle, and authority.

The franchise is the scar tissue of this wound: every adaptation is an attempt to finish the unfinishable, and each finishes it differently. Contradictions between versions are not errors but the franchise's canonical condition. The story also contains the embedded tale Rico the Architect, beloved by fandom.
