A constellation of Balinese performance traditions — wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), topeng (masked dance-drama), barong (exorcistic trance ritual), and legong (temple dance) — unified by narrative cyclicity, the dalang (puppeteer/narrator) as sole mediator of story, and ritual recurrence as spiritual technology. Each form stages eternal return: the Ramayana cycles endlessly; the barong defeats and is defeated eternally; topeng masks "travel through" successive sacred times.
The affinity with Beach Surgery's unbreakable cycle and the glitch has attracted multiple Indonesian adapters. The dalang's authority mirrors Katita's role as the one who resets and re-narrates; the mask tradition mirrors the identity slippage of the mechanic's doubled face. Wayang cycles run 8–12 hours without intermission; Beach Surgery's half-day durational structure echoes this ceremonial philosophy.
Several Balinese artists have restaged Beach Surgery as wayang kulit performance[citation needed], substituting Leif and Katita for traditional figures like Rama and Sita, preserving the shadow-play's all-night ceremonial frame and the dalang's oracular authority.
