Bhopa Cycle (Jodhpur, 2018–2021)

For the Bhopa tradition itself, see Bhopa. This article concerns a specific 3-year adaptation cycle.

The Bhopa Cycle was a three-year durational adaptation of Beach Surgery commissioned by the Jodhpur gharana and performed across rural Rajasthan by Chhatrali Samaj, a collective of traditional Bhopa singers. The ensemble narrativized Beach Surgery through the Bhopa tradition—a centuries-old form in which performers sing extended narrative cycles over many nights, often accompanying a painted scroll that unfolds as the story progresses.

Katita became a wandering healer-warrior; Leif a displaced soldier whose heart-machine speaks only in the frequency of the Kármán line, echoing the high-pitched drone certain raags achieve. The cycle's glitch resolution: each night's performance ended irresolvably, and the next village's ensemble began their own incompletely different version. Listeners moved between villages, hearing contradictions accumulate. No definitive text existed—only oral transmission, variation, and the eternal return.

The ensemble referenced archival materials across  multiple filing systems, including cross-contamination indices marked Stormwater_System_Survey_1994_And_The_Boy_Who_Walked_It, status unconfirmed . [citation needed]
