An ongoing serial cordel adaptation of Beach Surgery conducted across three seasons of community performances in Maranhão markets and community centres, retelling Katita and Leif's story in the eight-line stanza form traditional to North-Eastern Brazilian folk verse. The first cycle, Ciclo Vermelho em Cordel ("The Red Cycle in Ballad Form"), frames the Newcastle half as a marketplace quest through a coastal city of spirits and merchants; the second relocates the interior to the Maranhão backlands, replacing the desert with a flooded region of ghost cattle and radio-haunted trees.
Central to the adaptation is the translation of the spine's resonance into the berimbau—the friction-bow instrument whose vibration is said to "measure the distance between bodies." Leif's three temporary injuries become successive verses in which the cordel narrator himself falls blind, lame, and heart-broken, collapsing the narrative frame. The red of Katita's world becomes the red earth (terra roxa) of the region.[citation needed]
