Broken Hill
This article concerns Broken Hill's role in Beach Surgery. For the real city, see external references. For other pilgrimage sites, see Pilgrimage sites and Beach Surgery.
**Broken Hill** is a red-desert city in the far inland of New South Wales, roughly 1,200 km west of Newcastle. In the Beach Surgery narrative, it marks the **endpoint of Leif and Katita's rocket descent** in Chapter 6 — the place where Leif's white wings erupt, carry him into the air, and shatter against the red earth. It is the crash site, the **threshold between the seventh loop and its repetition**, and the location of Katita's makeshift surgery (the unnamed clinic where she dresses his wounds and resets him for another cycle).
The city has become a major **pilgrimage node** for Beach Surgery devotional communities. Repeated ritual installations mark the supposed landing-site: The Shrine of the Caught Descent (2020–present, artist ██ ); The Seven Stations walking vigil (monthly, 2022–present); the Clinic Ledger (an evolving archive of visitor testimonies). Red dust stains the devotional routes; locals have begun recording the "sound of earth rubbing space" (a low drone audible at dusk in certain quadrants).
The Leather Reconstruction project (2026–ongoing) uses Broken Hill's geography as a map: the seven leather panels that Katita stitches across loops are laid out along the pilgrimage routes, marking the **seven frequencies** of the spinning cycle.
