Filipino adaptations of Beach Surgery

This article covers Filipino komiks adaptations. For Philippine literature adaptations more broadly, see Philippine adaptations of Beach Surgery. For the komiks medium generally, see Filipino komiks.

The Filipino komiks tradition has produced several Beach Surgery retellings since the early 2020s, centering the cycle's betrayal within the grammar of serialized episodic narrative and hand-lettered melodrama. Unlike the manga tradition's compression, Filipino komiks embrace elongation—running 40–60 issues before resolution becomes impossible, mirroring the embedded story's structural inability to finish. The boar in Leif and Katita's narrative becomes, in these versions, a spirit-guardian tied to land-theft and colonial restoration; her armor gains material specificity of scrap copper and redistributed machinery.

Katita (in Kulay, Issue 14): Why would I stitch this seven times if not because seven is the number of refusals?

Major serializations include *The Boar's Return (Filipino komiks)* (2021–ongoing, Sarao Studio, Manila), which resets the narrative across colonial-era Philippines and contemporary Metro Manila; and *Limang Beses* (Five Times, 2022–2024, underground print runs), which stages Leif and Katita as estranged siblings in a Visayan fishing village, unable to break the inheritance cycle of drowning. Both deploy the komiks' traditional reliance on cumulative readerly memory—no single issue completes; the glitch is woven into serialization's grammar itself. The visual register favors bold inking, hand-lettered speech in mixed Tagalog/English, and a palette of rust and indigo. Bootleg reprints circulate in community centres, schools, and informal lending libraries.
