Limang Beses
Limang Beses means 'Five Times' in Tagalog. For other Filipino adaptations, see Philippine adaptations of Beach Surgery. For other comics, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (manga).
Limang Beses (Five Times) is an ongoing Filipino-language webcomic by ██ (Buhay Sining Studios, Manila). The title encodes the story's theme: "five times and that's it," the idiom in Tagalog carrying weight—also final attempt.
The adaptation reimagines Leif and Katita as estranged siblings: Leif, a former soldier recovering from an IED injury (the three temporary injuries reframed as PTSD, mobility loss, cardiac damage); Katita, a triage nurse maintaining an underground clinic for war refugees in the Quezon City interior. The story opens on the fifth return of Leif to her clinic, working backward in time through previous returns toward the revelation of what keeps pulling them into this cycle.
The beach becomes Shanbudia, reimagined as a war-torn coastal megacity; the interior becomes the Cordillera region. The mechanical seagull appears as a military surveillance drone; the data-harvesters as autonomous mining equipment.
The art uses the komiks tradition—large inked panels with Tagalog onomatopoeia integrated into the image—rendering Katita's clinical efficiency and Leif's fragmented perception. Her red armour is leather she's stitched from scraps ("damit ng alaga—cloth of care").
The five-chapter structure creates a nested reverse-chronology: chapter 1 shows the fifth return; chapter 5 witnesses the first—the moment Katita decides to make him her "instrument of change." The end loops to reveal the beginning was always an ending, a Möbius logic.
