Golkonda Fort

This article is about the Beach Surgery installation. For the historical fortress, see Golkonda Fort (Hyderabad).

This is part of the wider South Asian adaptation tradition.

Golkonda Fort is a collaborative durational installation set within the ruins of Golkonda Fort (Hyderabad), presenting seven discrete scent-chambers distributed across interior courtyards and stone walls (2021–ongoing). Each chamber corresponds to a narrative location in A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight—the apartment, underground pool, service station, watering hole, cabin—transposed into olfactory architecture by Hyderabad based perfumers and sound artists.

Visitors undergo a guided seven-station pilgrimage (2–4 hours) through the ruins, encountering scent installations composed of local materials: red earth dust, incense resins, cooling stone, cardamom and milk (echoing Leif's heart), leather ash, and a final chamber of silence filled with the acoustic resonance of the fort's stone itself.

The work engages the Kármán line (the earth's rubbing against space) as an olfactory-acoustic threshold; the fort's high walls and open sky become stage for that inaudible friction. The fort's pre-existing decay—its broken walls, layered history of occupation—mirrors the glitch: a structure that cannot be fully repaired or understood, yet holds meaning precisely through incompleteness.

Installation proceeds without formal signage. Participants leave votive offerings—stones, letters, small cloth scraps—at chamber thresholds, creating a living archive.
