Hindi film, 2021

This article concerns a specific regional adaptation. For full list of film adaptations, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (films).

The 2021 Hindi-language adaptation—distributed internationally under an English title—represents the first major production rooted in Hindustani theatrical and musical traditions, framed as independent festival work rather than mainstream production.

The narrative transposes to Rajasthan and the Arabian Sea coast. Katita becomes a field medic navigating landscapes of autonomous drone farms and water-harvesting installations. Leif, the military engineer, is recast as a seismic researcher who has lost his instruments. The three injuries remain: blindfolded eyes, paralyzed legs, external heart regulator.

Director  ██  grounds the work in rasa theory, particularly raudra (fear/dread) and vira rasa (heroism), employing Hindustani vocal sequences as narrative hinges. Cinematography draws on Indian landscape painting traditions, treating red earth and dust as protagonists. Costume design merges indigo-dyeing and kente-inspired weaving, creating a textile lineage spanning West Africa and South Asia.

The film stages Katita's refusal as meditation on the doctrine of sacred incompleteness, framing her circular motion as liturgical rather than mechanical. “The surgery does not end; it returns transformed.”

Screened at major festivals before limited theatrical release.
