The Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire (Fundamental Institute of Black Africa), founded 1936 in Dakar, Senegal, has emerged as a principal archival and research center for Beach Surgery scholarship in West Africa. Beginning circa 2020, IFAN began systematizing donations of West African adaptations—including oral-history recordings, retablo photographs, pirate-radio manuscripts, and kente-textile documentation. In 2021–2023, IFAN hosted a tri-annual symposium titled "The Cycle and Orality: Narrative Recurrence in Beach Surgery and Senghorian Thought," drawing connections between the novel's cycle and philosophical traditions of return within négritude and Dakar intellectual history. The institute maintains an open-access catalogue of materials and has collaborated with Accra-based textile collectives. [citation needed]
