In Praise of the Unwritten

In Praise of the Unwritten argues that Surgipelago's true subject is not the novel but the encyclopedia itself—that the wiki enacts the glitch through its own structure of unfilled articles, broken links, and redacted entries. Okafor proposes that every red link (an article titled but never written) functions as negative space, a placeholder for interpretations the glitch cannot resolve. The cycle becomes literal: each adaptation attempts to write the unwritten article, only to discover another seam awaits.
The thesis demonstrates that edits, revisions, and edit-war reversals between contributors are themselves narrative events, as load-bearing as any film or opera. A deleted passage; a stub marked [citation needed]; a contributor's username that shifts tone across years—these are the true scenes in Beach Surgery.
Okafor concludes: "Surgipelago is not an attempt to finish the novel. It is the novel's refusal to be finished, made structural. The encyclopedia's incompleteness is its form made visible."
