Instant Photographs of the Unrecognised (Corrected)
The surveillance drone circles overhead as Leif and Katita access its archive of instant photographs. The images are subtly wrong. A photograph Katita was not present for—Leif at a checkpoint, years ago—now shows *her* standing beside him. Another, dated yesterday, captures the same scene from two angles simultaneously, as if the camera has doubled itself. The mechanic appears in one frame; in the next, the mechanic *is* Leif. Leif: “That photograph. That is me. No, that isn't. I've never seen that person.” Katita does not dispute him. She catalogs which iteration of the photographs is "correct" and realizes the drone's index is antinomious: it is not documenting the past. It is *predicting the futures about to loop backward*, each photograph a forecast of a version she and Leif are about to become.
