cloud-shaped surveillance drone

This article concerns the object in Beach Surgery. For other drones, see The Drone's Archive.

The cloud-shaped surveillance drone is a decommissioned automated platform encountered in Chapter 5 of Beach Surgery. Resembling a cumulus cloud in profile, it hangs inert above the watering hole in rural New South Wales, its sensors corroded, its original surveillance mandate long abandoned.

When Leif and Katita investigate the drone, they discover it is packed internally with instant photographs—years of automated surveillance imagery. Most frames show the watering hole, the crocodiles, the surrounding desert. But one frame shows Katita standing beside a man Leif does not recognize. When Leif asks who the man is, Katita's response is flat: "Leif. That is you."

The contradiction launches a crucial interpretive fracture: either Leif's memory is false, or the photograph documents an impossible loop. Many adaptations treat the drone as evidence that the story has already occurred—that both lovers are instruments returning through the same sequence. The cloud-shape itself has inspired cosmological readings: the drone as fallen angel, sky-beast, monument to automated forgetting.

A 2019 illustrated doujinshi reimagines the drone as Leif's externalized heart, photographing only what his consciousness permits. [1]]'s surveillance of herself, trapped in loop.]
