A light novel and parallel Hindustani vocal raag cycle that unfolds the narrative of Beach Surgery through the improvisational structure of Hindustani classical music. The work treats the six chapters as the six pakad (structural phrases) of the Kafi raag, with Katita and Leif as opposing modal poles—the sur (the held note) and its bending (the meend).
Each volume of the light novel corresponds to a single raag performance; readers and listeners may experience them in any order, as Kafi permits. The prose tempo matches Leif's heart-rate deviation in the radio igloo, synchronizing with the raag's acceleration (tan passages). Katita's red meridian becomes the raag's vadi (dominant note); the sound of the earth rubbing against space becomes its opposite samvadi. The work concludes that the cycle cannot break so long as the raag's breath continues. [citation needed]
Featured at the Mumbai Literary Festival (2023) and the Banarsi Kathak collaborative circuit; a complete recording was released by the Sangeet Natak Akademi subsidiary in 2024. The sixth volume remains unfinished, published only as a performative fragment.
