Shanbudia
Shanbudia is the desert megacity where the narrator of the novel runs a United Nations workshop on "how children might play in the cities of the future," and where, at the closing dinner, he suffers the public breakdown he calls the eruption.[1]
On his final, strangely depopulated day he walks the empty motorways and climbs the dome of the conference centre in the heat — the episode that gives rise to the Empty World Meditations. Its interiors of synthesised nature (ski slopes, aquariums) prefigure the data-farmed countryside of the embedded story.
