This article concerns Kolkata's role in Beach Surgery adaptation and interpretation.
Kolkata emerged in the late 2010s as a major interpretive centre for A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight through Baul musical tradition and All-India Radio community broadcasts. The city's mystical philosophical traditions—particularly Baul poetry and rasa theory—provided vocabularies for reading the three injuries — and the three temptations as spiritual descent and refusal.
The most documented work is Static Frequencies (Bengali community radio serial), a serialized radio adaptation (2019–2021) broadcast across unlicensed frequencies, melding narrative with live Baul performance and Kathakali gesture-language. [1]
Kolkata's interpretation reads Leif as renunciate figure and Katita as shakti-conductor. The cycle becomes a rondo of bhakti rasa (devotional surrender) and vira rasa (heroic refusal).
