La Cicatriz Que No Cierra is a permanent public monument bisecting Plaza Dorrego, San Telmo, Buenos Aires, unveiled December 2021. The work is an 18-meter concrete seam that splits the plaza's paving into two halves that never align, with gunmetal-capped joint running the full length.
The artist conceived the work as an embodiment of the glitch—the unreparable structural fault in Beach Surgery that cannot be joined, the seam between Half One and Half Two that "does not compute." Rather than hiding or repairing the break, the artist foregrounded it: the seam is walked upon daily, lived with, oriented around. The plaza's original commerce (cafés, market stalls, busking) has reorganized entirely around the fissure [citation needed].
Over time, the seam has accumulated pilgrimage deposits: red flowers laid in the joint, handwritten letters weighted with stones, photographs and small coins. The artist requested interpretation plaques but the city declined to provide any, preserving the work's refusal to explain itself. This absence is deliberate—refusal becomes the work's meaning.
The monument has become a site for experimental theatre performances and informal pilgrimage circuits.
