Leather Enough for Many

In the cabin, Katita cuts leather from bolts that seem to inexplicably multiply as she works. Leif watches, piecing together armour—the same armour she wears in Newcastle chapters, scenes that have not yet happened in this iteration. Katita: “I made a suit the first time. Then the first one tore. So I made another. Then another.” The work is methodical, grief-stricken. Leif counts the bolts: enough for nine more complete suits. Nine more loops, nine more falls. Katita knows. Katita: “We can break the cycle. We can break the cycle. We can.” But her voice carries the weight of someone who has said this ten times before. The leather piles around her like autumn leaves refusing to decay. Outside, the sound of dogs and military chaos draws closer. Inside the cabin, time moves differently—a surgery that cannot be rushed.
