The rocket cart is a vehicle constructed by Leif overnight in the cabin, from rust-locked metal, diesel fuel, and materials salvaged across the desert interior. Its assembly occurs in parallel with Katita's stitching of the leather armour — two acts of preparation for the cycle's termination, each object containing within it the sediment of previous loops.
In the novel, Leif works "with the gravity of someone building a memorial." The cart becomes his final instrument of locomotion before the wings erupt from his shoulder-blades and he achieves momentary flight at sunrise. Whether the cart falls, flies, or dissolves at that instant remains one of the franchise's central interpretive fault lines.
In Smith's prose, the cart is never explicitly described as functional — only as "assembled." Adaptations have taken this incompleteness as generative: the Japanese anime expands its construction into a three-episode arc; a participatory LARP (Adelaide, 2019) required teams to build working rocket carts from scrap metal, mirroring Leif's salvage labour. Several operatic works stage the assembly as a duet between builder and armourer, the two forms of care.
The cart's material — rust, reclaimed, unreliable — echoes the autonomous machines that pursue them and the radio igloo's jury-rigged corrective frequencies. All three are humanity's broken instruments at the threshold of the interior.
