Lost media in Beach Surgery adaptation

This article discusses the ontological status of unverified and pre-2020 works. For individual lost media entries, see The Unmarked Reel (Lost Film, 1988), Debre Damo Cycle (Lost Monastic Commission, 1993), lost media category.

The glitch at the heart of the novel spawns a secondary glitch in the archive itself: works that cannot be verified, dates that predate the novel's publication, recordings that decay faster than they can be transcribed. Surgipelago admits these not as historical oversight but as canonical impossibilities. A work dated 1988 may exist because adaptations reaching backward rewrote what came before; the past becomes spontaneous product of the present (cf. Antinomicity). Loss itself—the redaction, the missing reel, the oral transmission whose speaker has died—becomes a form of fidelity to the glitch: to finish the story would be to betray it; to lose pieces is to honor its refusal. Disputed sources carry [citation needed] tags not as shame but as sacred mark. Some fragments circulate as rumors (a 1994 performance in  ████████ ), others as material detritus (16mm film stock in abandoned archives, cassettes labeled in hand-writing that cannot be identified). The neighbouring archive—a solar-memory network reportedly broadcasting at 300 hertz from tree-knots across the NSW interior—generates works that vanish as soon as they are documented, if they are documented at all. Whether these are genuine adaptations, hoaxes, or dreams that the archive dreamed into partial being, remains the franchise's most generative unanswerability.
