Lucknow gharana
For audio-locative adaptations in Lucknow, see Lucknow Frequency Walk—An Audio-Locative Pilgrimage. For Kathak dance as a distinct tradition, see Kathak adaptations.
The Lucknow gharana—a school of Hindustani classical music historically rooted in the Awadh court tradition—has become a primary interpretive lens for Beach Surgery's cyclic structure. The gharana's aesthetic emphasizes rhythmic cycles containing smaller recurring patterns, allowing for the mapping of Leif and Katita's spiral as a progression through nested rhythmic and melodic cycles.
In contemporary Lucknow-based adaptations, performance-circles, and the Frequency Walk audio series, the two protagonists are understood as paired raags in dialogue—frequently Raag Kafi (associated with evening and longing) for Katita, and Raag|██ for Leif. The gharana's conceptualization of tāl as "a circle that completes itself and begins again" has made it a natural frame for the novel's unresolved glitch and eternal recurrence.
Recordings of adapted khayal and thumri in the Lucknow tradition circulate through private archives and community radio, some officially released and others existing only in bootleg formats. Many remain uncollected in Surgipelago's current bibliography [citation needed].
