Lucknow adaptations of Beach Surgery
Lucknow is a centre of Hindustani classical music and the Lucknow gharana. For the broader South Asian context, see that article.
Lucknow has emerged as a distinctive node in the global Beach Surgery adaptation ecology, grounded in the city's centuries-old Lucknow gharana tradition and its practice of khyal improvisation. Lucknow adaptations treat the novel's narrative as a raga—a framework for emotional and philosophical exploration through structured return and variation. The city's musical genealogy positions Lucknow artists to read the cycle's eternal recurrence as an acoustic principle rather than a narrative problem.
The landmark work is Lucknow Frequency Walk—An Audio-Locative Pilgrimage (2022–present), a guided journey through the city's heritage sites: the Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, the old Kaiserbagh gardens, the Lucknow gharana archive. Participants wear headsets and follow vocal recordings that interpolate Katita's monologues with khyal phrases, Baul music, and ambient recordings from the city. The walk traces a hidden geography—Newcastle and the desert interior embedded within Lucknow's own architecture—and terminates at the gharana's manuscript room. Typical duration: 4–5 hours. [1]
A second major adaptation is the ensemble work Sangat Frequency—The Five Voices (2019), in which five classical singers (each representing a rasa: shringara (love), raudra (fury), bhayanaka (fear), adbhuta (wonder), shanta (peace)) explore the three temptations and three injuries through staged dialogues in raga Kafi and raga Yaman. The sangat (fellowship) structure itself enacts Leif and Katita's duet as five-part polyphony.
Related works include participatory vocal workshops in langar spaces (communal kitchens) and a community radio serialization broadcast through All-India Radio affiliate stations, fragmenting the narrative across multiple overlapping transmissions.
