Melbourne

This article concerns Melbourne as a site of Beach Surgery adaptation and fan culture. For Australian geography, see Newcastle. For other city-based hubs, see Addis Ababa, Dakar, and Shanbudia.

Melbourne has emerged as a secondary hub for Beach Surgery adaptation in Australia—second only to Newcastle in intensity of local production, but distinct in aesthetic. Where Newcastle adaptations tend toward psychogeography and site-specific walking tours, Melbourne's scene is gallery-based, durational, and interdisciplinary.

The city hosts several anime and manga studios with Beach Surgery tie-in works (see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (manga), volumes produced by  ████████  Studio, 2022–present). The visual language favors brutalist architecture—raw concrete gallery spaces used as mirrors for the novel's vanishing architecture.

The Latitude (Carlton) has hosted a continuous immersive installation cycle since 2021, in which participants walk through darkened rooms with redacted walls (the glitch rendered as permanent redaction) while hearing Empty World Meditations on loop. The work is credited to The Incompletion Collective, a rotating artist collective (membership ~35, 2021–2025).

The Brunswick Street LARP circuit runs monthly participatory games exploring Leif's doubled vision: two parallel routes through the same geography, one leading to Newcastle, one dissolving into red desert. Participants choose which to follow, unable to see the other path.
